Kolkali literally means dance with sticks. It is one of the most popular folk arts of Kerala and is believed to be 200 years old. Dancers form a circle and move around it, striking each others' handheld batons in accordance to the accompanying song sung by them. Mundu and banyan are the commonly used costumes for the performance of Kolkali. The choreography of Kolkali is influenced by Kalarippayattu; especially the body postures and steps.
