Kathakali, a highly stylized classical Indian dance-drama, is renowned for its resplendent make-up, elaborate costumes, detailed gestures and well-defined body movements. With its genesis in the seventeenth century, Kathakali is considered to have its roots in the techniques and tradition of Krishnananttam and Ramanattam. Five elements combine to render the aesthetic charm of Kathakali. They are: natyam (expressions), nritham (dance), nrithyam (enactment), sangeetham (song) and vadhyam (instrumental accompaniment).

The performances are traditionally based on themes from Hindu mythology, especially the two epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Malappuram has nurtured several talents in the field of Kathakali. Vazhenkada, a small hamlet on the banks of river Thootha, is known for its Kathakali heritage. Padma Shri Vazhenkada Kunchu Nair and his son Vazhenkada Vijayan are two of the prominent names in Kathakali. Other noted personalitiesin Kathakali from Vazhenkada include Kalamandalam Balaraman, Kalamandalam Krishnadas, Kottakkal Devadas Vazhenkada Anandan, Vazhenkada Govinda Warrier, Vazhenkada Kunjunni Nair, Kalamandalam Rajagopal, Vazhenkada Krishna Warrier and Vazhenkada Rama Warrier.
