Malappuram owes a lot to its non-resident Keralites for its economic and social development. The Middle East is the major hub for those who seek a livelihood outside India. During the 70s and 80s when the boom started a good number of people from Kerala, especially Malappuram, migrated to the Middle East in pursuit of a better living. They sent their money back to the home country, resulting in major development in rural Kerala.
